The Slasher's Manifesto

In recent times, various parties have decided to pull the plug on the movement known as Slash. I first became aware of this fact when the Cease and Desist letters hit the Harry Potter sites, even though these sites emphasized and often required the relations to be between adults. Then came the purge on ff.net. In an attempt at self preservation sites became password protected, removed themselves from search engines, and even stopped updating altogether, but still slash found itself under attack.

Creators have often denounced the existence of slash, calling slash supporters "dirty", "nasty", "sick", and often "freaks". Jhonen Vaquez denounced all slash pairings in his creations, saying that they make him sick to his "ill-proned belly." Butch Hartman, creator of Fairly Odd Parents and Danny Phantom, has now banned all slash supporters of any kind from his forums.

Slash has a long and colorful history. The beginnings of slash fans saved Star Trek from cancellation after its second season. We've added color and flavor to most of the interesting shows in the archives through our involvement in the background. Ignoring us is like ignoring the Mafia. We've bolstered that which we want, we've destroyed that which we don't and though we're joked about we are feared by most people who don't know us or understand what we're trying to accomplish. However, here the analogy ends. We don't want world domination, we don't want the world on their knees, and we're not in it for money. We want acceptance. We want reality to accept us for who and what we are.

I want to be able to walk down main street and not get stoned to death by angry onlookers who don't understand. Or, in our case, I want the option roam the internet without being flamed and banned just because of who and what I am.

We're fighting for our freedom. We're fighting for our lives. We're fighting to change the bigotry that runs the TV execs. We did it with early Star Trek. We did it with The X-Files. We did it with Buffy. We did it with Xena. Apparantly we're doing it with SpongeBob but I don't know much about that one.

I have been a slasher for over a decade. I have slashed movies, anime, books, tv, cartoons, comic books, and history. I have slashed Star Trek, Harry Potter, The X-Files, Superman, Batman, Lord of the Rings, Invader Zim, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Excel Saga, Dungeons and Dragons, and now Danny Phantom. And nothing, nothing, will change that.

I am a slasher and this is my manifesto.

Sociology doctoral thesis: Slashfic writers and their open acceptance of many things that society seems to deem 'questionable' or 'morally repugnant'... versus the acts that are done to shut them down.

Wait, that wouldn't be a doctoral thesis, that'd just be a concept of 'hypocrisy'.

I'm sure there's a way to make that into an acceptable thesis. Especially since I read a similar thesis in my Queer Theory class last term.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

That which has been done to us is unconstitutional. This is not perfection, this is destruction. This is not justice, this is tyranny. This is not tranquility, we will not take this sitting down. This is not liberty when we cannot express our views peacefully among ourselves, not even in a little corner of the internet where we're sure not to annoy anyone.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. I do not have liberty. I am not happy. I am alive, but without liberty and happiness, life is meaningless.

Enough. Otherwise I'll end up picking apart the entire Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and I don't want to do that without preparation.
